Last night the Chargers (4-6) suffered a loss in their second conference game of the season against the New Plymouth Pilgrims. Both teams struggled to score early on. Harmon, Smith, and Gill contributed to end the first quarter with a score of 8-10. The second quarter started off slowly, with the Pilgrims pushing the ball and scoring despite our defensive efforts. After a long drought that spanned from the end of the 1st quarter well into the 2nd quarter all of the Chargers’ points fell within the last three minutes. They were able to tighten the deficit before halftime. The score at the half was 14-20.
The Chargers came out after halftime with renewed energy and ended the third quarter in the lead, 31-30. They continued pushing, with Harmon hitting a few three-pointers and a jumper in a short span of time. Smith, DeMain, and Wiedmeier all added points to get the Chargers to a 42-42 tie with a little over two minutes left.
As the seconds counted down, the energy in the gym escalated. Gill came in, stole the ball, and made a layup to put the Chargers in the lead. On the next inbounds, the Chargers fouled and sent New Plymouth to the line for double bonus. The Pilgrim made his first shot, making the score 44-43 with only twenty seconds left. He missed the next shot, and Cucchiari had possession, pushing the ball up the floor. Unfortunately, the Chargers put up a shot with 6 seconds left and missed. The Pilgrims raced down the court and made a buzzer-beater to win the game. The final score was 44-46, Pilgrims’ victory.
The Chargers move to 1-1 in conference play.
